What Are ERCOT Real-Time Prices? 

ERCOT real-time prices are locational marginal prices (LMPs) calculated using the Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED) process, determining the cost of delivering the last megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy within the Texas electricity grid. All these acronyms and technical terms can be confusing, but the upshot is fairly simple: ERCOT real-time prices are valuable pieces of market information that convey the most up-to-date electricity prices in the state of Texas. 

How Are ERCOT Real-Time Prices Calculated? 

The SCED process dispatches energy resources in real-time to meet demand at the lowest possible cost, increasing grid reliability. The real-time price reflects the marginal cost of the last unit of energy necessary to meet demand at that moment and location. LMP, SPP, RTORPA, and RTORDPA 

Just what are all these acronyms related to ERCOT and its price data? Let’s get into them: 

  • LMP: ERCOT prices are a type of locational marginal pricing. LMPs represent the marginal cost of supplying electricity at a specific point in the power grid. 
  • SPP: The Southwest Power Pool is a separate but coordinating organization that manages the power grid in states adjacent to Texas. The SPP works with ERCOT on power transfers and emergency conditions that cross their interconnected boundaries, affecting the price used for settling energy purchases by Load Serving Entities (LSEs).  
  • RTORPA: The Real-Time On-Line Reserve Price Adder incorporates scarcity for on-line operating reserves into the System Lambda, the system energy component of the real-time LMP. 
  • RTORDPA: The Real-Time On-Line Reliability Deployment Price Adder captures the impact of reliability deployments on real-time energy prices.  

In the ERCOT market, the SPP is the sum of the base LMP, the RTORPA, and the RTORDPA, plus any Off-Line Reserve Price Adder (RTOFFPA), if active. This approach means energy prices reflect not only the marginal cost of energy but also the scarcity of reserves and the cost of reliability deployments.

You can see live ERCOT prices through dashboards provided by ERCOT or third-party data services. These platforms display different categories of prices, which represent various market activities, such as real-time, day-ahead, and ancillary services prices.  

Working With the Data 

Here are some tips to get the most out of ERCOT real-time prices: 

  • Find your hub/zone: ERCOT calculates its real-time prices across thousands of specific locations, called settlement points. However, for contracting, energy procurement, and analysis, prices are often referenced at major aggregation points called hubs (e.g., the Houston Hub or North Hub) or within broader load zones (e.g., the North Load Zone). To find your ERCOT hub or zone, use the Small Business Administration (SBA) HUBZone Map and enter your address in the search bar. 
  • Interpret values: The primary value is the LMP. This is the true marginal cost of energy at a specific point. It comprises three components: energy, congestion, and losses. 
  • Avoid common pitfalls: When a retail energy provider sells a product tied to the real-time price, they don’t just charge the ERCOT LMP — they add their own costs. A low LMP product with a high adder might be more expensive than it seems at first. 
  • Where to pull data programmatically: ERCOT provides data via its public Market Information System, often accessible through a web service API or data extracts. 
  • Where to find historical SPPs: You can visit the official SPP Market Monitoring or Documents and Filings page. Just like ERCOT, SPP provides historical market data, including LMPs and hub prices, on its own platform.
